FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What is recycling?
Recycling is the process of converting waste materials into new products. It prevents any useful materials from going to waste. The environment benefits from this as there is a reduction in energy usage, and in air and water pollution.
Why should I recycle?
What can I recycle?
In Cambridge, you are most likely using a blue bin for your recycling.
You can recycle:
- Paper
- Cardboard
- Cartons
- Plastic bottles and bags
- Food tins and drink cans
- Empty aerosols
- Wrapping paper
- Tinfoil
- Glass jars and bottles
- Batteries
You can’t recycle:
- Food
- Liquids
- Nappies
- Clothes, textiles or shoes
- Polystyrene or Styrofoam
- Foam and sponge
- Non-packaging plastic
- Flat glass
- Pyrex
- Kitchen paper and tissues
- Dirty packaging
- Paint tins
Your green bin is for food and garden waste, and your black bin is for non-recyclable and non-compostable materials.

Why can't some items be recycled?
Recycling is a great way for you to help the environment, but putting the wrong materials into your recycling bin can contaminate the other recyclable materials that are there. That will mean that the waste will be incinerated as Energy from Waste (EfW) instead.
It also starts to become expensive as the reusable materials have been contaminated and gone to waste – meaning that these materials need to be found elsewhere.
We recommend that you don’t put recycling into black bin bags, as the items in the bag can’t be seen and we won’t know if it’s been contaminated.
